As far as I can tell this was the path to the error:
1. Connect to SFTP server
2. Open a file for editing (this may not matter)
3. Connect to VPN server without disconnecting SFTP session
4. Fail first WinSCP password challenge caused by new IP
5. Error (might have had one more opportunity to put in password prior to error, not sure)
