@sajagi: WinSCP does use that extension. It falls back to shell commands only if the server does not support the extension (most do not).

Well, yes, to calculate the checksum with SCP protocol, WinSCP uses commands like
md5sums. If the server does not have them, then it won't work.

Protocol: SFTP/SCP
Steps to Reproduce:
Connect to remote Linux server via WinSCP
Right-click any file in remote panel
Select Properties > Checksum tab > Verify button
Observe failure with above error.
Command 'md5sums "md5sum"'
failed with return code 127 and the following error message.
-bash: line 324: md5sums: command not found
Environment:
