I have added a request to optionally restore the previous behavior to the tracker:
Issue 2202 – Optionally do not shorten tab titles

Hah well no that's a different issue that makes tabs completely useless
6.0 Beta – Tabs are too small, useless

First fix the short tabs, then bring scrolling.

Since 6.0, the tab titles are shortened. So the scrolling won't be needed in most cases:
Issue 1423 – Better handling of large number of tabs

Notepad++ allows this and its amazingly handy.
